Homework American Poetry II: ACL 306

Dear Students,

We are going to walk at the campus. So I want you to do the following things for the next lecture on the 3.04.2019:

1. We may walk around and in the campus for an hour. Some of you may have to run. So come to the lecture wearing comfortable shoes (come with sneakers).
                                                                https://www.local.gov.uk/topics/children-and-young-people

2. Since this is a poetry class, we are going to write poetry. I want you to bring your notebook, scratch pad or a scribbling block. Be aware that you have to write or take notes while walking, we won't have a desk.

3. Please print out for class poems by Ezra Pound:

In a Station of the Metro

The apparition of these faces in the crowd;
Petals on a wet, black bough.

***

Alba

As cool as the pale wet leaves
of lily-of-the-valley
She lay beside me in the dawn.

***

Reflection

I know that what Nietzsche said is true,
And yet
I saw the face of a little child in the street,
And it was beautiful.

The Return

See, they return; ah, see the tentative
Movements, and the slow feet,
The trouble in the pace and the uncertain
Wavering!

See, they return, one, and by one,
With fear, as half-awakened;
As if the snow should hesitate
And murmur in the wind,
            and half turn back;
These were the “Wing’d-with-Awe,"
            inviolable.

Gods of the wingèd shoe!
With them the silver hounds,
            sniffing the trace of air!

Haie! Haie!
    These were the swift to harry;
These the keen-scented;
These were the souls of blood.

Slow on the leash,
            pallid the leash-men!
