If you are interested in the power relations of men and women and in madness, you can read Wide Sargasso Sea.

Antoinette Cosway, a Creole heiress, from the time of her youth in Jamaica, to her unhappy marriage to a certain English gentelman. He renames her to a prosaic Bertha and declares her mad. Caught in oppressive patriarchal society in which she fully belongs neither to the Europeans nor the Jamaicans.

NEXT BOOK FOR CLASS

                                               Dear Students,

After reading about the dark heart of Dracula, we are going to analyze a novel called the Heart of Darkness. Although it sounds pretty similar you will see that these books are quite different from each other. Please read PART I of Joseph Conrad's book "Heart of Darkness" (p1- 49) for our class at 13.04.2017.

You can download the book from this web page:

for quick reader

Dear Students,

If you are interested in the "uncanny" and "gothic" you can read Henry James's novel "The Turn of the Screw".
The story is about a governess who is mad, turns mad or is haunted by former ghosts. Many critics have tried to determine the exact nature of the evil hinted by the story and others have argued that the brilliance of the novella results from its ability to create an intimate sense of confusion and suspense within the reader.

If you want to now more about the "unclean" you can read Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter". It is in the 17th-century, Puritan Massachusetts- Bay Colony and tells the story of Hester Prynne. She gives birth to a daughter after an affair and struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity. Throughout the book, Hawthorne explores themes of legalism, sin, and guilt.

These are recommendations! You do not have to read these novels!

About the Mid -Term

Dear Students,

It is really strange that I have received at least 40 mails from my other class, totally in Panic, whereas this class here (Intro To English Novel II) asked me nothing.

So I got worried about you.

Hope you know that you have to look at your notes and that I am going to ask you from both "Gatsby" and "Dracula".

wish you good luck
